Standing Up For Tax Fairness in Saskatchewan
Historically, the CP Railway had a constitutionally protected tax exemption status regarding Saskatchewan with the federal government. Recently, the Saskatchewan Legislature and the House of Commons unanimously passed motions to remove this tax exemption, to restore tax fairness for the province of Saskatchewan. The matter is currently being studied at the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee in the Senate of Canada. For CP Rail’s tax exemption to be withdrawn, motions to that effect need to pass in all three institutions.
I had the opportunity to question Saskatchewan’s Minister of Justice, Gord Wyant, on what the Senate passing this constitutional motion would mean for the people of Saskatchewan.
