Psychiatric Expert Dr. Gaind explains why mental illness should NOT be eligible for assisted suicide
During the Senate Legal Committee pre-study of the Trudeau Government’s assisted suicide Bill C-7, we heard some presentations from “experts” – professors and lawyers with ivory tower, theoretical ideas – who want people with mental illness (as a sole condition) to be eligible for assisted suicide.
This is alarming and wrong. At the Senate Legal Committee pre-study, psychiatric expert Dr. Sonu Gaind explains why mental illness should NOT be eligible for assisted suicide. We cannot predict irremediability for mental illness.
Dr. Gaind also explains why a “sunset clause” on Bill C-7’s mental illness exclusion would be a terrible idea. He states that there is a total lack of evidence to justify this. He further states this is not about removing autonomy, this is about avoiding discrimination that can lead to the premature deaths of these vulnerable people.
In this case, a so-called “sunset clause” could sunset the actual LIVES of those who struggle with mental illness. We must protect the vulnerable.
