Trudeau Ministers, Why the Rush on Your Assisted Suicide Bill?
Before our Senate Legal Committee’s hearings, the Justice Minister offered tepid support for his own assisted suicide bill, Bill C-7, saying he hoped the exclusion for people suffering with mental illness as a sole underlying condition from accessing assisted death (as in Bill C-7) was only “temporary.”
Health Minister Patty Hajdu, the former recipient of the “Champion of Mental Health Parliamentarian” award, also offered carefully qualified support of Bill C-7. She said extending assisted suicide to people with solely mental illness required “further research and further study.” Clearly, these Ministers aren’t comfortable with the assisted suicide legislation their own government is proposing. So why are they pushing to have this bill which deals with life and death approved in such a hurry?
Watch me question Health Minister Hajdu at our Senate Legal Committee hearings on Bill C-7.
