Trudeau Elections Bill Removes Elections Commissioner’s Independence
Senator Denise Batters challenges Trudeau government officials at the Senate Legal committee on an alarming aspect of the Trudeau government’s Elections Bill. Bill C-76 removes all actual independence from the Elections Commissioner (in charge of enforcement), and instead makes him a subservient employee of the Chief Electoral Officer.
Trudeau’s Democratic Institutions Minister Gould and her Privy Council officer (whom I question here) both deny this characterization. But, when the Elections Commissioner will be hired, evaluated for “good behaviour”, salary determined, office location determined, fired — all by the Chief Electoral Officer — it is obvious that the Elections Commissioner will be an employee of the Chief Electoral Officer.
This Trudeau government needs a definition of “independence” that bears some resemblance to the actual definition of independence!
